SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate with joy the solemnity of the Holy Trinity. In our gospel reading from Matthew chapter 28 verse 19, our Lord gave his disciples this instruction before he went back to the Father. He says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore make disciples of all the nations, baptise them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Here we can see our Lord revealing the nature of our God, three persons in one God, to his disciples. It is interesting to note that in the old testament this revelation was not given to our forebears in their journey with God.

Remember that before God created our first parents, he did not reveal his name to any human being rather he used a form of majestic plural to conceal his true identity. He simply made this unique announcement, “Let us make man in our own image.” (Genesis 1:26). When God appeared to Moses in the burning bush, he simply told him, “I Am who I Am” Exodus 3:14. Subsequently, they invented names like Adonai, Elohim, El Shaddai, Yahweh etc, for God.

In the new testament, Our Lord made a startling revelation that reveals the name of God and the persons involved in this God of ours, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We now know that even though we have three persons in God, we have just one God. God the Father did the work of creation, while the fallen world was redeemed by God the Son while God the Holy Spirit came to give us the truth that will lead us to God. He inspires and energises us on the way to our Father in heaven.

Generally, people behave like the god they worship. The God we worship teaches us the importance of unity and peace in our community if we hope to make progress and live in harmony. Again, this Solemnity teaches us that where love exists, God will certainly give us the strength to accomplish any project excluding waging wars against others. Love helps us appreciate ourselves and appreciate people around us. Happy Solemnity of the Holy Trinity!
