Message From Fr Joe – 4th Sunday of Easter (30th April 202)

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER– 29th /30th APRIL 2023

A DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Dear Parishioners,

Over the coming Sundays we will hear the ‘I am’ words of Jesus: “I am the Good Shepherd; I am the gate of the sheepfold; I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; I am in the Father and the Father is in me; I am going to the Father; I am the bread of life.”

All the statements give us a deeper understanding of whom Jesus is for us. By declaring that he is the Good Shepherd also is indicating his leadership, his concern, and his care and protection of us, just as a shepherd looks after his sheep.

By reminding us that he is the Way, the Truth and the Life, he is telling us that He is the One to follow; that he reveals the truth about God and gives us life here and now. He is the one that promises us Eternal Life too.

This image of the Good Shepherd is a powerful image and an inspiration for all to follow. It is especially true of those whom the Lord may be calling to serve the people of God as Priest, Missionary, Religious Sister or Brother.

Young people and maybe not so young, wish to serve others. We see it in nursing, teaching, youth work, and some of this energy and commitment needs to be channelled into service within the Church Community. Hence we pray for Vocation to the priesthood and religious life but also for marriage and parenting. Marriage is not an easy option. When parents are generous, their children will be generous. The self-sacrificing of parents will inspire generous young people too.

Self-sacrificing in Church leaders, priests and religious will inspire new young heroes. We have to be inspired and courageous enough to dream God’s dream for us and not get trapped in our own cosy comfort zone. This Good Shepherd Sunday is not just about recruitment but also about promoting outgoing communities that allow our young people to answer God’s call to serve in different aspects of the needs within our parish communities.

One final word. Who is going to replace me when I retire in July? Plans no doubt are in hand. I understand there are 13 priests retiring in these coming months. You need to pray earnestly for our parish community – like never before! Is there anybody out there, willing to step up?

CORONATION: In a few days’ time we will be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III. We pray for our new monarch and all the Royal Family. On Friday, we will offer Mass with all those intentions in mind. The crowning ceremony has its origin in scripture which tell of rulers being crowned as leaders of the people, like Kind Davis, for example.

We pray that all the celebration will be joyful and meaningful. (Prayer Cards are available).

Have a blessed week,

Fr Joe
