Reflection By Fr. Vincent

15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 14th July 2024

Dear Parishioners

Dear Parishioners

Dear brothers and Sisters, on this 15th Sunday in this ordinary time, the gospel of Mark chapter 6 from verses 7 to 13, reminds us that we are all called to be active missionary disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ in the world, what an honour. You will recall that last Sunday, our Lord came to his own native town of Nazareth in the company of his disciples in continuation of his missionary work to preach the word of God, heal the sick and set free those possessed by evil spirits. Unfortunately, his own people rejected him due to their lack of faith in his authority and wisdom. That did not in any way pour cold water on his good intentions to get his message across to those willing to listen and receive the good news.

Today our Lord summons his apostles and sends them out in pairs on a mission to go and proclaim the gospel of repentance, to anoint the sick and to cure them as well as to drive out demons from those they possess. He gives them very specific instructions on how to approach their ministry with simplicity. He instructs them to travel light without taking such items as food, money in their belt and extra sandals with them. Anything that might constitute an obstacle or distraction to their mission has to be set aside. For example, a soldier heading to the battle field has no business with dancing shoes because it will make his movement in the battle field clumsy and sluggish thereby making him a target for the enemy.

My dear friends in the Lord, we were all recruited and made active missionary disciples of Jesus Christ at Baptism. As Jesus sent his Apostles so is he sending us today with the same authority to go into the world and preach the message of repentance for the salvation of souls. We are called to go and proclaim the gospel through our way of life and to share with others our experience of Jesus Christ who is the reason for our existence.

Thanks for reflecting with me and have a great week.
