Today we celebrate The Epiphany of the Lord, a Feast that reminds us that Jesus came to bring Light into the darkness for everyone.
There are many situations that bring darkness to our life. When we see in the news the things happening around the world, like wars, famine, people without proper housing, the financial crisis, and so many other realities, we can feel that there is so much more darkness than light. But the Gospel reminds us of the power of His Light, the light shines strong even in the darkness. The light that we can find in Jesus today is the same light that shone in the star and guided the wise men. Despite darkness and confusion, the difficulties and others trying to mislead them, the wise men were able to follow the star, they believed and trusted in its light and did not give up on their journey. There are many moments in our life when it is not easy to believe or to have hope but if we persevere He will help us to find the right path and will restore our strength.
Pope Francis’ message on BBC Radio 4 last Saturday expresses this beautifully which gives us hope to begin this new year of 2025. He gave a clear message on hope and kindness
“Pope Francis has urged people not to be drawn towards “pessimism and resignation” despite wars and social injustices throughout the world, but to retain a “gentle gaze of hope” … “Hope and kindness touch the very heart of the gospel and show us the path to follow in our behaviour. A world full of hope and kindness is a more beautiful world. A society that looks to the future with confidence and treats people with respect and empathy is more humane.” … Francis said kindness was “not a diplomatic strategy” but instead represented a “form of love that opens hearts to acceptance, and helps us all to become more humbler”. He added: “How important humility is. Humility lends itself to dialogue, helps to overcome misunderstandings and generates gratitude.”
Pope Francis is pointing out how kindness can be the light, the star, that leads us to God in all circumstances. And as well our own acts of trusting kindness, however small, can be a light that is guiding others.
May the perseverance of the wise men guide us through this year taking us to live in His Hope. Have a blessed week.- Sr. Anabel Gonzalez, FMV
