REFLECTION

3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER 19TH APRIL 2026

This Sunday invites us to reflect on how we come to recognize the Risen Christ and what that recognition means for our lives. The readings draw us into a pattern that lies at the heart of Christian faith: the unfolding of God’s plan through Scripture, its fulfilment in Christ, and our personal encounter with him in the Eucharist.

In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter stands before the crowd at Pentecost and explains the astonishing events they are witnessing. He makes it clear that this is not confusion or excess, but the work of the Holy Spirit. More importantly, he shows that what has happened is the fulfilment of God’s promises. By drawing on the Psalms, Peter teaches that the resurrection was always part of God’s design. The Scriptures, once obscure, now come alive in the light of the Risen Christ.

This same pattern appears in the Gospel story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. They begin their journey weighed down by disappointment and loss, unable to understand what has happened. Yet they remain open, willing to listen as the Stranger explains the Scriptures to them. Their hearts begin to burn with new understanding, but it is only in the breaking of the bread that their eyes are opened and they truly recognize Jesus.

This movement, from confusion to understanding, from hearing the Word to encountering Christ, is also our journey. In every Eucharist, we first listen to the Scriptures being opened to us, and then we meet Christ personally in the sacrament. Here, we receive not just a symbol, but his very life, given for us and shared with us.

The response of the disciples is immediate: they return to Jerusalem to share the good news. This is the shape of our calling too. Having encountered the Risen Lord, we are sent out to witness to him in our lives.

This Sunday reminds us that Christ is not distant or hidden. He walks with us, speaks to us through Scripture, and reveals himself in the breaking of the bread. Our task is to remain open, to recognize him, and to share that joy with others.
