The Gospel for the 5th Sunday of Easter invites us into a deeper trust in Christ, especially through His words: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me” (John 14:1). These words were spoken during the Last Supper, a moment filled with uncertainty and fear for the disciples. Yet, Jesus offers them, and us reassurance.
A simple story helps illustrate this message. A priest once asked for directions to a City because he did not know the way. After being helped, he offered to show the dispatcher the way to heaven. The dispatcher jokingly replied, “If you don’t know the way to the city, how can you know the way to heaven?” While humorous, the story reminds us of an important truth: knowing the way requires trust in someone who truly knows it. In our faith, that someone is Jesus.
Today’s world gives us many reasons to feel troubled. Globally, we see wars, conflicts, and the growing threat of climate change. Nationally, violence, corruption, and division disturb peace. Personally, we face struggles in our families, workplaces, and relationships. These realities can easily shake our confidence and fill our hearts with fear.
Yet, Jesus does not deny these troubles. He knows them well, because He Himself experienced suffering. Still, He calls us to trust. Faith in Him does not remove our problems instantly, but it gives us strength and peace in the midst of them.
This Sunday reminds us that we are also responsible for how we respond to life’s challenges. Harboring resentment, guilt, fear, and constant criticism only deepens our burdens. Instead, we are invited to surrender these to God.
As we continue our Easter journey, we are called to trust more deeply in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Even when the road is unclear, He leads us. Let us hold on to His promise and remember: do not let your hearts be troubled trust in Him.
