REFLECTION

 PENTECOST SUNDAY 24TH MAY 2026

Pentecost Sunday celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary, sent by the Father through the Son. This event reminds us of Christ’s faithfulness to His promise. Before His ascension, Jesus assured His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit, and He fulfilled this promise without the need for written agreements or contracts. Unlike human promises that often require legal documents, Christ’s word is trustworthy and life-giving.

The feast of Pentecost comes from the Greek word Pentecost’s, meaning “fiftieth,” because it is celebrated fifty days after Easter. Originally a Jewish festival, it became an important celebration in the Catholic Church from the time of the apostles. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that Pentecost fulfilled Christ’s Passover through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church.

The Holy Spirit is described through the Hebrew word ruah and the Greek word pneuma, both meaning “breath” or “wind.” Like breath, the Spirit gives life, direction, and strength. Although invisible like the wind, the Holy Spirit’s presence can be recognized through His effects in our lives. Without the Spirit, human life lacks true purpose and guidance.

The reflection also reminds us that the Holy Spirit was not given only to the apostles. Through baptism, every Christian receives the Spirit. Saint Paul teaches that we are temples of God and that His Spirit lives within us. However, many fail to recognize this gift, and therefore little transformation happens in their lives.

Finally, Pentecost calls Christians to cooperate with the Holy Spirit by transforming themselves, their families, and their communities into places of unity, love, forgiveness, and service. Faith in the Spirit must be expressed through action and shared for the renewal of the world.
